What to Expect During an Extended Family Photography Session
There's something incredibly special about having multiple generations together in one place. Whether you're gathering for a family vacation, celebrating grandparents, or simply taking advantage of having everyone together, an extended family session creates photographs that become more meaningful with every passing year.
If you've never planned one before, here's what you can expect.
We Plan for More Than Just One Big Group Photo
While we'll absolutely create the classic image of everyone together, that's only a small part of the session.
I like to tell the story of your family by photographing all of the relationships that matter most.
Depending on your group, we'll typically capture:
The entire extended family
Grandparents with all grandchildren
Individual grandparents with each family
Siblings
Cousins together
Adult siblings
Parents with their children
Each individual nuclear family
Couples (if desired)
Any special groupings that are meaningful to your family
Before your session, we'll talk through any "must-have" combinations so nothing important gets overlooked.
Every Nuclear Family Gets Their Own Mini Session
One thing that makes my extended family sessions a little different is that every immediate family gets dedicated time in front of the camera.
Rather than feeling like you're only there for a large group portrait, each family receives a collection of images that feels like its own portrait session.
We'll photograph:
Natural, candid interactions
Relaxed family moments
Classic portraits where everyone is looking
Individual children
Parents together
Siblings together
This gives everyone a gallery they'll be excited to print and enjoy long after the extended family gathering is over.
A Relaxed 90-Minute Session
Most extended family sessions last about 1½ hours.
That gives us plenty of time without feeling rushed, while still keeping younger children engaged and happy.
Depending on your location, we can even use two nearby settings if it helps add variety to your gallery.
Don't Worry if Kids Aren't Perfect
Some of my favorite photographs happen between the posed moments.
Children don't need to sit perfectly still or smile on command. We'll play, explore, laugh, cuddle, and let personalities shine through.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is photographs that actually feel like your family.
Choosing the Right Location
We'll choose a location that works well for everyone, especially grandparents and young children.
Beautiful light is important, but so is accessibility and comfort.
Whether we're on the beach, in a meadow, at a park, or somewhere meaningful to your family, I'll help choose the best time of day for beautiful light.
You'll Receive Your Full Gallery
After your session, you'll receive a beautifully edited online gallery with high-resolution digital images available for download.
From there, you can order prints, albums, and wall art, or simply download the files to enjoy however you'd like.

Most sessions last approximately 90 minutes.

My standard extended family sessions work well for groups with multiple households. If your group is especially large (15–20+ people), let me know and we'll discuss the best approach.

Absolutely! Every nuclear family receives dedicated time during the session for both candid and posed portraits.

We'll create a list before the session, but common combinations include:

Yes! If two locations are close together, we can often incorporate both within the session.

I recommend coordinating rather than matching. Soft, complementary colors and timeless clothing photograph beautifully. After booking, I'll send guidance to help everyone feel confident in their wardrobe choices.

Living and photographing in the Pacific Northwest has taught me that a little rain rarely means the session can't happen. In fact, some of my favorite images have been made on days with moody skies, mist, or light drizzle. The soft light after a passing shower can be absolutely magical.
Most often, we simply keep an eye on the forecast and proceed as planned. Showers here tend to move through quickly, and it's common to find a beautiful window of clear weather. If needed, we might shift our start time slightly to take advantage of the best conditions.
If the weather is truly prohibitive—heavy rain, high winds, or conditions that would make the session uncomfortable or unsafe—we'll work together to find another time that fits both our schedules.
My goal is always to create beautiful photographs while making sure everyone has an enjoyable experience, regardless of what the forecast says.

9-10 am start time usually works for naps and lighing
4:00 pm we can get some golden light in specific locations.
Golden hour—shortly before sunset—is usually my favorite f you have people in your party that can stay up late.. golden hour usually is 8:30
Will young kids cooperate?
Probably not the entire time—and that's perfectly okay.
I've photographed families for nearly two decades, and I don't expect children to perform. Some of the most treasured images come from genuine laughter, hugs, exploration, and the wonderfully unpredictable moments that make your family unique.
